A Guide to Avoiding Hidden Hotel Booking Fees
A traveller's guide to spotting resort fees, city taxes, parking charges and card surcharges — and how The Chocolate Box keeps pricing simple and honest.
Booking a hotel should feel like the start of your holiday, not a maths exam. Yet many guests arrive to find the price they clicked online is not quite the price on their final bill. Here is a plain-English guide to the extra charges that quietly appear at hotels — and how to avoid them.
1. Resort and "facility" fees
Some hotels advertise a low nightly rate and then add a compulsory daily "resort fee" for things like Wi-Fi, pool towels or the gym. Always check the total price on the confirmation screen, not just the headline rate.
2. City and tourist taxes
Many European cities and some UK destinations charge a small nightly tourist tax. It is legitimate, but it is rarely included in the advertised price. Ask the hotel directly if you are unsure.
3. Parking
City-centre hotels often charge £15–£40 a night for parking. If you are driving, ask whether parking is free, chargeable, or off-site before you book.
4. Breakfast that "looks" included
On some booking sites the default rate is room-only, and breakfast is a paid extra at check-in. Read the rate name carefully — "Bed & Breakfast" and "Room Only" are very different bills.
5. Early check-in and late check-out
A few hours either side of the standard times can carry a surprise charge. If your flight or train times don't match, request the extension in advance rather than on the day.
6. Credit-card and currency surcharges
Booking in a foreign currency, or paying with certain cards, can add 2–3% to the bill. Where possible, pay in the hotel's home currency on a card with no foreign-transaction fee.
7. Cancellation and no-show fees
The cheapest non-refundable rate is only cheaper if your plans do not change. For any trip that is not 100% certain, a flexible rate is often the better value.
8. Mini-bar, in-room snacks and bottled water
Hotel mini-bars remain one of the most expensive shops on earth. If you are watchful about budget, a quick trip to a local shop on arrival goes a long way.
